O azevinho (Ilex aquifolium), também chamado azevim, azevinheiro, pau-azevim e sombra-de-azevim, é um arbusto de folha persistente da família das Aquifoliaceae, cultivado normalmente para efeitos ornamentais devido aos seus frutos vermelhos. Estes frutos também são denominados de azevinhos, bagas, azinhas ou enzinhas.
É uma das numerosas espécies do género Ilex e a única que nasce espontaneamente na Europa, sendo bastante comum até os 1 500 metros de altitude.

Ilex aquifolium (holly, common holly, English holly, European holly, or occasionally Christmas holly), is a species of holly native to western and southern Europe, northwest Africa, and southwest Asia. I. aquifolium is the species familiar in Christmas decoration, and is regarded as the type species of the genus Ilex, which by association is also called "holly". It is a dioecious tree or shrub found, for example, in shady areas of forests of oak and in beech hedges. It has a great capacity to adapt to different conditions and is a pioneer species that repopulates the margins of forests or clearcuts.
As a tree, it can exceed 10 m in height. It is usually found as a shrub or a small tree about 6 or 7 feet tall with a straight trunk and pyramidal crown, which branches from the base. It is slow growing and it does not usually fully mature due to grazing, cutting, or fire. It can live 500 years, but usually does not reach 100.

Le houx (Ilex aquifolium) est un arbuste, parfois un petit arbre, à feuillage persistant de la famille des Aquifoliacées, couramment cultivé pour son aspect ornemental, notamment grâce à ses fruits rouge vif. C'est l'une des très nombreuses espèces du genre Ilex, et la seule qui pousse spontanément en Europe.

C'est une espèce de sous-bois assez commune en Europe jusqu'à 1 500 m d'altitude. Les rameaux couverts de drupes qui persistent tout l'hiver sont recherchés au moment des fêtes de Noël, et son feuillage persistant lui vaut d'être considéré comme une des plantes du nouvel an avec le buis, le laurier, l'if, le lierre, le genévrier et l'ajonc.
